After a little camping in France I’m back! Despite the fact that it’s a lousy summer so far, or maybe because of it, a lot the recent releases seem very ready for fall. Very delicate and comforting soundscapes and melodies, I hear musical saws, flowing guitar riffs, harps, lots of strings. I can almost feel the warmth of the fireplace and the cup of coco in my hands. Right now the only thing in music land that’s slightly worrying is Shakira’s latest single..
Florence + The Machine – Lungs
A friend of mine was kind enough to bring this lovely and very talented lady to my attention.
I try very hard not to compare. But Florence + The Machine really reminds me of Bat For Lashes, I can’t help it! Though it’s not a bad resemblance, Florence and her Machine have just as much musical muscle as Bat. Maybe even more! I mean songs like Blinding and Cosmic Love are such majestic powerhouses that everything I try to do while listening is of no use. I just need to listen and pay close attention to such songs, and completely drown in them. Judging from the video I think we can all figure out the reason why this record is called ‘Lungs’. Ah, bless ya Florence.
A favourite: ‘Cosmic Love’ [Just tell me that doesn't give you goosebumps!]
Red Riders – Drown In Colour
These aussies got a decent grip on indie rock. The entire record sounds like a pleasant breeze with plenty varation to keep this one on rotation. Their sound isn’t the most original, but the majority of the songs are darn catchy and I can’t find that many skippers, that’s quite an accomplishment these days!
A favourite: ‘Ordinary’ [the brightest breeze of the record, you gotta love the guitar riff!]
If you suddenly suffer from a Norah Jones flashback, that makes perfect sense. I mean she does have a similar voice! It’s comforting though that Sarah is a totally different musician with a completely different musical style. It’s also good to know that it’s difficult to pinpoint her style. It’s both dreamy because of soft, warm voice, and funky thanks to the refreshing rhythms and beats. She’s got Regina Spektor’s playfulness, but Blasko’s voice gives this record more soul and depth. Lovely listen, try it!
Patrick Wolf – The Bachelor
Ok, I realize this one has been released last month, but I just completely missed it! I still think it’s worth a mention, so here goes. Patrick Wolf is one of those artists that always slip through, blame my short attention span. And my love for quick ‘n snappy pop songs. With Wolf you need time and patience, and when you do you will be rewarded. He’s got an incredible voice and a very unique sound. What’s interesting is that this release was set to be a double cd, called ‘Battle’. (which is named after the town in Sussex where he recorded the material, a town which will sound familiar to some of you..!) Wolf eventually decided to split them up, with ‘The Conqueror’ set for release in 2010.
A favourite: ‘Hard Times’ [I'm officially addicted]
