Shop!: Anthropologie

Friday, September 18th, 2009

When I was visiting New York I had the luxury of time to visit some incredible shops in Manhattan. One of my favourite shops is Anthropologie. This is a store chain spread through the USA and Canada. They sell a large variety of unique, vintage-like items, from clothes to home deco and furniture. There aren’t any shops anywhere else, as far as I know. So all I can say is.. thank goodness for online stores!

H&M new ‘Home’ collection

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

I don’t know about you, but I completely forgot about H&M’s home collection and I also completely forgot about the idea that a collection can be expanded..
Anyway, I just discovered some lovely, fairly new items on hm.com:

Shop!: De Nostalgie

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Last May I went along with my parents to a place called Orvelte, celebrating my mother’s birthday. If you ever go to the Dutch province Drenthe, make sure to go there! Orvelte is a very small village which is well-known because of its monumental value and it’s mostly a museum-like environment. Here you can experience part of Dutch history, as the official site would say.
It’s basically a village full of farmhouses turned into shops. They’re not all that interesting to walk into, though there’s one that alone would be worth the visit, ‘De Nostalgie‘. Here’s what you’ll find:

Away From Home: Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Friday, June 26th, 2009

As I might have mentioned before, I’ve been to NYC. It was my first time overseas, and it’s been pretty intense. In just a week I went to three concerts, three museums, a play, a movie, did the usual sightseeing, even had time left to shop and stroll through Central Park and I ate whenever I would allow myself to. Which was not very often. So yes, I left America a few pounds and dollars lighter but I’ve seen many, many things and enjoyed myself enormously.

I was lucky enough to have found a great hostel to stay, ZIP112 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It felt much more like sharing an apartment with a couple of people than staying at a hostel though, which is brilliant. Besides the great Manhattan view from the hostel’s terrace there’s much more to this neighbourhood as it’s particularly vibrant. This is where the cool kids take up residence. At night, mostly during weekends, the area really comes to life. Bedford Avenue and surrounding streets are filled with tiny shops, bars and restaurants. There’s a bohemian breeze flowing through the streets, very artsy and relaxed.
If you’re closeby or planning a trip to New York, do take the effort of jumping on the L train down one stop into Brooklyn. I’ve got some shops lined up for you if you do.

(If there’s anything else you want to know concerning the area, travelling to America or anything else, leave a note!)

Obviously there’s a lot more out there, and I honestly haven’t seen as much as I wish I had. Ah well, there’s always a next time!

Shop!: Geekery

Some random bits and pieces that I thought are rather geeky. Not sure if it deserves its own category, will have to wait and see. ;-)

Shop!: Wannekes.com

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

I’ve been fiddling around with the site’s layout this weekend and made a few changes, for the better in my opinion! As I mentioned earlier I wanted to add a second sidebar. Well.. let’s just say that is a work-in-progress for now. Can’t stop updating though, life goes on!

Dutch interior stylist Tanneke Neessen created a webshop for all things worth buying to spice up your home. I’ve been wanting to post about this shop for a very long time, but eventually forgot about it. That is until I found old screenshots of some of the wonderful items sold on Wannekes.com. Prices go through the roof for us Ikea and Hema folks, but it can’t hurt to drool over some stunning designer darlings, don’t you think?

Bubbles lamp by Jaime Hayón for Bosa, Wallpaper Clouds by Saint Honoré Wallcoverings, Woodstokk bowl by Wik & Walsøe, Stamped and Sealed earrings by Kiki van Eijk, Killim cushions by Arzu Firuz, Seraphine cage by Georgios Maridakis for Spell, Herkimer candleholder by Arik Levy for Gaia & Gino and Stuffed Cabinet by Josef Blersch and Mander Liefting for Snodevormgevers.

Crochet Unusuals

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

There’s much more you can buy or create with this technique apart from painfully cliché and ‘cute’ doilies and hats.

Sanna Annukka & Marimekko

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

I’ll admit I’m biased, I already knew Sanna from the incredible illustrative work she did on Keane’s Under The Iron Sea in 2006. So every once in a while I check her site to see what she’s been up to.
For some time now she has been working on a spring collection for Marimekko, a Finnish company known for its colourful home and fashion items. So now we can enjoy her art in a very different way.. she’s created designs for cloths, fabrics, purses, bags, plates, mugs and a few other items.

Ihmemaa art fabric, bag ‘Kauris’, Taikamylly black/white fabric, Taikamylly plate (set of 2), Kanteleen Kutsu tin box, Squirrel & Bird mugs, Taikamylly plywood tray, Kantaleen Kutsu fabric.

You should be able to purchase these items at a local shop. In case your attempts fail, I noticed the NYC store has a nice webshop.

Furniture Frenzy: Slotmakersstraat

Monday, February 9th, 2009

I’ve been meaning to go down town and shoot some pics at local shops, as I think they deserve some attention. There are actually plenty of lovely, slightly hidden shops in the center of Leeuwarden, my hometown. Two of those secret treasures can be found in the Slotmakersstraat.
